Tom Brady Now the Frontrunner in MVP Race, ahead of Allen, Herbert

Tom Brady has been the frontrunner for MVP this season, but it is not because of his play on the field. His team’s success in spite of their quarterback’s poor play has put him ahead of other candidates like Patrick Mahomes and Russell Wilson.

The NFL MVP candidates 2023 is a list of the top NFL MVP candidates for the upcoming season. Tom Brady has been named the frontrunner in the race, with Allen and Herbert trailing him.

Tom Brady, the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is still defying Father Time and playing at a high level despite his age, guiding his club to a 4-1 record in the NFC South. Brady, 44, threw for 411 yards and five touchdowns in the Patriots’ 45-17 win over the Miami Dolphins at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday. Brady passed for more than 400 yards and five touchdowns in a single game for the first time. According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Brady currently leads the NFL in passing yards following Week 5. Brady currently has 1,767 yards, moreover 100 yards ahead of Derek Carr of the Las Vegas Raiders, according to Smith (1,605).

Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams is third on the list (1,587), while Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers and Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals are fourth and fifth, respectively, with 1,576 and 1,512 yards.

Brady also has the most throw attempts (225), ahead of Herbert’s 207, and the most completions (149), ahead of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who has 141. Brady is now attempting to surpass Drew Brees’ all-time completions record. Brady now has 6,927 yards, putting him only 216 yards behind Brees’ 7,142. According to ESPN data, Brady ranks second in the NFL in touchdown passes with 15, only one behind Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Based on a tweet by Football Outsiders founder and CEO Aaron Schatz, who is considered the “founding father of football analytics,” Smith reported that Brady is now leading the Most Valuable Player race, ahead of young quarterbacks such as Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, Herbert, Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys, and Stafford. Brady, according to Schatz, has the greatest value and now leads the MVP race based on his DYAR, or Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement.

Brady has thrown for 1,767 yards and 15 touchdowns on 149 of 225 attempts, with just two interceptions.

The new DYAR leader among quarterbacks, the quarterback with the greatest value according to our statistics, and therefore the leading contender for MVP? Allen or Herbert aren’t the culprits. Or Mahomes, Stafford, Prescott, or Murray, to name a few. Tom Brady is 44 years old.

Lavonte David’s injury has progressed

After linebacker Lavonte David sustained an ankle injury in the first half of the Buccaneers’ blowout victory against the Dolphins on Sunday, the Buccaneers lost a key defensive player.

According to Luke Easterling of USA Today, David has a low-ankle sprain and will be out for some time. David is unlikely to play Thursday against the Philadelphia Eagles, but he will not be put on injured reserve. This is some excellent news since it means he’ll be back in less than three games for the Buccaneers. Devin White will have to step up his game in the absence of David. Until David recovers, the Buccaneers are likely to start experienced reserve Kevin Minter in his stead. On defense, the Buccaneers have youngsters K.J. Britt and Grant Stuard as backups.
